In 2018, Brazil recorded 78.7 million pending lawsuits before the Judiciary, awaiting final settlement. The number is one of the largest to date. In addition to the huge number of lawsuits, the number of law professionals keeps growing. The Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB, Brazilian Bar Association) has a staff of 1.2 million professionals (including lawyers and law interns, November 2019).

This critical scenario has created a fertile ground for the development of technology-based products and services for the enhancement of the legal sector. Law techs and legal techs (in Brazil, the terms are interchangeable) are leading this movement, focused on technological solutions for the legal market. The number of these startups increased by 300% between 2017 and 2019, as revealed by the Associação Brasileira de Lawtechs e Legaltechs (AB2L, Brazilian Lawtech and Legaltech Association).

Brazil currently has about 150 law techs and legal techs, established in various areas and seeking to transform the way the legal market operates. Today, I will be
presenting a few important categories of law techs and legal techs in Brazil.

Legal tech in Brazil

1. Analytics and jurimetrics
Startups in this category develop tools to anticipate court decision outcomes based on data, helping lawyers make better decisions. DataLawyer has developed its own platform that uses artificial intelligence to enhance legal analytics.

2. Document automation and management
Lawtechs and legaltechs in this category create software for the automation of legal documents, as well as for Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) activities. There is a startup called Contraktor which offers digital signature and document automation services.

3. Compliance
These startups promote actions aimed at complying with legal standards, and develop tools to disseminate the culture of integrity in companies. Kronoos, by the
way, offers risk management and compliance services by researching over 1,300 different sources and creating a detailed report.

4. Public data extraction and monitoring
These lawtechs and legaltechs develop solutions for extracting and monitoring public data. These startups optimize their customers' time by providing market readings in advance. InteliGov monitors public data and generates up-to-date information for lawyers.

5. Office and legal department management
Startups in this category provide tools that assist in the routine management of law firms and legal departments. This represents the largest number of initiatives in
Brazil today. Aurum develops legal software to help law firms and legal departments manage their tasks.

6. Marketplace
This category comprises law techs and legal techs that enable networking by connecting legal professionals. They also allow individuals and companies to find lawyers throughout Brazil. With LinkLei, lawyers have access to business opportunities as well as quality legal content.

7. Online dispute resolution (ODR)
These startups develop solutions aimed at solving conflicts online in order to avoid formal lawsuits via mediations, arbitrations or agreement negotiations. Sem Processo, for instance, connects lawyers with legal departments to resolve legal issues more efficiently and quickly.

As it stands, someone (an individual or a company) will eventually develop a technology solution that will cause a disruption (rupture or discontinuation of an
established process) in the Brazilian legal market, changing the way professionals work.
